NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

NVQ’s have changed, the new qualifications achieved by workers in the construction sector will either be called NVQ Diploma or NVQ Certificate, as of September 2010.

As part of the new QCF, every unit and qualification have a credit value (one credit represents 10 hours, showing how much time it takes to complete) and a level between Entry level and level 8. There are three sizes of qualifications in the QCF: Awards (1 to 12 credits), Certificates (13 to 36 credits) and Diplomas (37 credits or more). What’s Involved:

To gain an NVQ is proof of competence; this is achieved via a combination of visual assessment and evidence. It is important that any previous written evidence like certificates from other formal training is presented to your assessor for inclusion within you portfolio that will be built up during your assessment process, your Assessor will help and guide you through this. A minimum of two site visits will be necessary; more visits are needed for additional categories.

During a site visit the assessor will require to assess candidates against the NVQ criteria for each category, this should be in a live working environment. Candidates will be asked under pinning knowledge questions to endorse understanding. Each candidate will be assessed on their understanding and compliance of safe working practices. Photographs and/or video footage may be taken of the assessment. These will be used as evidence and held in the portfolio of evidence.
